Activities
Organic Garden
We cultivate a certified organic garden of about 3,500 square meters that feeds those who live here and all the people who visit us: collaborators, volunteers, and tourists. When there is surplus, we are able to sell locally or at markets. We grow our seedlings from seed. For fertilization we use manure from our donkeys and compost. The garden is spread across several terraces that in the past were vineyards, since this valley has a warm and dry microclimate. Our orchard is still young, but we already have an abundance of peaches. In recent years we have also started experimenting with the cultivation of ornamental flowers and medicinal plants for sale.
Wood Craftsmanship
From our woodworking workshop come creations made from noble, locally sourced woods such as chestnut, walnut, cherry, pear, and apple. These are transformed into furniture, often unique designs and sometimes custom-made, as well as staircases, doors, and windows. We also create washbasins, sculptures, and almost anything you can imagine.
We also carry out general carpentry work, including bridges, porches, traditional granaries (hórreos), and restoration projects.
Donkey Routes
We offer guided walks accompanied by our donkeys and one of us as the muleteer, following the old paths that once connected the villages of the area.
Our donkeys carry the picnic food, water, and your backpacks, while the muleteer explains the local flora, fauna, landscape, culture, and ethnography of the surroundings.
Renewable Energy
Mazo de Mon is an "off-grid" village. It is not connected to the electricity grid or to a sewage system, and we have also organized the water supply ourselves. When we first arrived here, there were no pipes to bring water to the houses, no wiring, and no electricity.
Today we generate electricity through a photovoltaic system. We have running water, and greywater is treated by filtering it through settling ponds with aquatic plants that naturally clean the water.
In the past, it was actually one of the first villages in the area to have electricity. Using the installations created for the Mazo, an electric turbine was installed that also supplied power to two other villages.
Sharing Knowledge: courses
After more than twenty years, we now have the experience of what it means to create a project from scratch in nature, in a rural and wild environment, moving toward a sustainable life and that ideal of harmony with the earth and all its beings. This learning has been shaped through both mistakes and achievements.
We feel capable, and wise enough, to share this knowledge and, in doing so, to continue learning ourselves. For this reason, it will soon be a pleasure for us to offer courses and stays designed to promote, facilitate, inspire, and train people who are curious or who wish to begin a life closer to nature, in the countryside, and in sustainability.
Among ourselves, we call it rural integration.
Group camping area
We offer an exclusive space for group camping. You will have a private and unique outdoor area with an outdoor kitchen, tables, benches, a fire pit (always under supervision), a water fountain, dry toilets, a shower, and electricity. You will also have access to the other shared areas of the village.
It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a riverside ecosystem, explore the surroundings at a relaxed pace, and take part in the activities and workshops we offer.
There are also screen-free zones, because here luxury means switching off your phone, reconnecting with the rhythms of nature, playing, walking barefoot, swimming in the river, getting bored, and creating new adventures just like when we were children.
